US-based food manufacturer Fairmont Foods has issued a recall of nearly 35,145lb of ready-to-eat (RTE) pork and beef gravy products as they may have been contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically clear pliable plastic.

According to the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the frozen, ready-to-eat pork and beef gravy items were produced on 2 May.

The products that are subject to recall include 45lb cases containing nine 5lb plastic bags of ‘Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen Pork Tasso and Ground Beef Gravy’ and bear establishment number EST 2WM inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Fairmont Foods is reported to have shipped these items to Popeyes restaurant locations in Louisiana.

The company notified FSIS after it received a report that a consumer found a piece of soft pliable plastic in the product.

According to the US agency, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to the consumption of the products. Concerned consumers have been urged to contact a healthcare provider.

FSIS is also concerned that some products may be in restaurant freezers and has advised restaurants not to serve the product.

Consumers have been encouraged not to consume the products and to either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.

The recall has been categorised as Class II, which is a health hazard situation wher there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from the use of the product.

Last month, Tyson Foods recalled nearly 190,757lb of RTE chicken fritter products over possible foreign matter contamination, specifically hard plastic, according to the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
