Synergy Flavors, a member of the Irish-based Carbery Group, has acquired savory flavor and ingredient supplier Innova Flavors from Griffith Foods Worldwide. The financial terms have not been disclosed.

The purchase expands the savory capabilities of Synergy Flavors in alignment with the NPD happening in meat alternatives, sauces, side dishes and snacks.

It also adds process flavors to Synergy’s portfolio of extracts, essences, and compounded flavors of every form and designation, helping their customers to differentiate their products in F&B markets.

Savory ingredients trending
“This acquisition offers significant benefits to Synergy customers by providing them access to a proven range of flavors to meet the growing demand for natural flavorings and savory ingredients. In addition, these products complement Synergy’s current offerings for rapidly growing plant-based alternative food and beverages globally,” says Rod Sowders, president and CEO of Synergy Flavors.

“Synergy’s global footprint and history of investment in acquisitions will allow Innova customers to benefit from the deep flavor expertise and global reach of the Synergy organization.”

Jason Hawkins, CEO of Carbery Group, says that the acquisition of Innova Flavors makes sense for the company’s US flavor customers.

“It will enhance our global business in Asia and Central and South America, and bring opportunities right across our platforms of Dairy, Taste and Nutrition,” he continues.

“This deal is a strategic opportunity to grow our business, to strengthen our offerings for our customers and maximize what we can deliver for our shareholders.”

What’s happening in flavors?
This week, there have been several movements in the flavor space.

Azelis acquired Vigon International as part of its foray into the US flavors market.

Meanwhile, the growing demand for low- and no-alcohol is shaping the future of the adult drinks sector. According to IFF, drinking alcohol in moderation is becoming more mainstream as the new generation of young adults focuses on nutrition, personal health and well-being.

Also this week, in a Special Report, FoodIngredientsFirst reported that consumers are seeking security through food experiences and opt for comforting and nostalgic tastes. In line with this, “emotional discoveries” are pegged by flavor suppliers as a central theme in the realm of taste.

Last month, “Flavor Mashups” emerged as the first of Innova Market Insights’ Top Ten Flavor Trends for 2021. Hybrid flavor innovation is increasingly being used to deliver new sensory experiences as consumers become progressively adventurous, notes the market researcher.

Other Synergy Flavor moves
Synergy has also been innovating recently in the beverages bakery arenas. In March, the company collaborated with PureCircle in an “industry-first” to create a range of zero-sugar tonics sweetened with PureCircle Reb M stevia extract.

The company also released an ingredient tipped as making significant fat and calorie reductions in baked goods, such as muffins, cookies and biscuits.
