Flowers Foods will spend $25 million to convert its 40-year-old bakery in Lynchburg, Va., into an all-organic facility, the company revealed Jan. 9.

An announcement from the Virginia Economic Development Partnership stated that the bakery will be expanded and transformed for organic production for the mid-Atlantic states, and that “Virginia successfully competed with other states for the project.” It is scheduled to be completed by late summer, enabling the bakery to produce organic versions of Dave’s Killer Bread. Virginia will contribute a grant of $250,000.

Flowers operates 46 bakeries in 18 states, with more than 9,700 employees. In addition to Dave’s Killer Bread, the company’s brands include Nature’s Own, Wonder and Tastykake.

“We chose to convert our Lynchburg bakery for a number of reasons, including its geographic location, access to key interstate highways, and the partnership we have with local and state agencies,” Flowers COO Brad Alexander said in a statement.
